Midwest Mah Jongg

Questions We Get Asked All The Time

What is my score?

The numerical value posted on National Mahj card for the hand.

Do I get a bonus for picking my own “Mah Jongg” tile?

Yes. If you pick your “Mah Jongg” tile there is a 10 point bonus.

Is there a bonus for a jokerless hand?

Yes.  If you get “Mah Jongg” without any jokers (excepts a singles or pair hand) there is a 20 point bonus.

What if I give someone else “Mah Jongg”?

If there is one or no exposures, the person  who threw it scores -10 points on the score card.  If there are 2 or more exposures, that person scores -20 points on the score card.

What happens if I steal a tile and look at it during the Charleston?

There is a -10 point penalty at the end of the game.

When can I call a tile for exposure or “Mah Jongg”?

You have up until the next player has either discarded or racked the tile they picked from the wall.

If I touch a tile am I obligated to take it?

No, but if you lift it at all you own it.

I have already picked my tile from the wall, can the previously discarded tile still be called?

Yes, the previously discarded tile can be called until you either discard or rack the tile you picked.

At the end of the Charleston, someone has the incorrect number of tiles, now what?

Throw all tiles in and start again, unless East has already discarded the 14th tile. If that has happened, players with incorrect number of tiles are “dead” and the rest play on.

How are scores verified for correctness?

At the end of each game score cards are exchanged with the player opposite you.  You initial the game that was just played if you agree with the score.  At the end of round sign your name.

What if the “Official Scores Sheet” does not match my personal score sheet?

The “Official Score Sheet” is what counts.  Make sure you write legibly and verify the opposite players score after every game.
